Union Tribune Kids Magic Mile

Start line: 6th Avenue just north of Laurel
Finish line: Balboa Drive just south of Quince

Race day registration/packet pick up will begin at 7 a.m. near the start line.

Ages 10 to 12 (& up to 14) 8:00AM
Ages 6 to 9 8:20AM
Ages 5 & under 8:40AM

Strollers/baby joggers, and anyone over age 14 who is not doing the event accompanying a young child, please take the 8:40 start. Big kids (ages 13 - 14) can take the 8am start. Remember the medals are just for kids not parents or kids over age 12. This event is noncompetitive and will not be timed or scored.

The Kids Magic Mile starts and ends in Balboa Park near 6th and Laurel.
This event attracts over 6,000 little people and is the largest kids' run in California.

The noncompetitive one-mile races are perfect for kids of all ages, and no pressure to win, because at In Motion, every child is a winner and is rewarded as such with a shiny gold medal, book and cool T-shirt at the finish line. Fun entertainment, celebrity story tellers, tasty treats and more round out this fun, must do event.

Kids Magic Mile Driving Directions and Parking:
From 5: Take Laurel Street Exit. Head east on Laurel to top of hill. Look for street parking near and around the west side of Balboa Park, and in available pay lots.

From Highway 163 southbound: Take University Exit. Turn Right on University, then left on 4th Avenue. Once you near the Park begin to look for parking. 6th Avenue will be closed from Upas to Juniper.

There is extensive street parking on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Avenues between Upas and Fir. While there is ample parking, consider car pooling and plan to arrive in time to give your child at least 60 minutes to get familiar with the event layout, register if you haven't, and get to the starting line in time for his/her event.

Union Tribune Race for Literacy

Start Line:      Balboa Park (Pan American Plaza)
Finish Line:     Pantoja Park (downtown on G. St.)
Parking:         Old Navy Hospital and adjacent area

Race day registration opens at 7:00AM (near the starting line)
Race day T-shirt pickup occurs after the race at the finish line in Pantoja Park
Race starts at 8:00AM SHARP

The Race for Literacy is a fast, and very scenic 8K (that's just under 5 miles) which starts in Balboa Park, winds its way down scenic Highway 163 (closed, of course) and finishes at Pantoja Park on G. Street in downtown San Diego. After the race, a party complete with treats, entertainment and booths in Pantoja Park awaits, then a bus ride back to your car in Balboa Park. This is one of San Diego's favorite events and is the second largest 8K in the country.

Race for Literacy Driving Directions and Parking:
To reach the 8K start line parking areas which are located on Park Boulevard on the east side of Balboa Park, use 5 north or south to the downtown area, take 10th to A Street, go East one block and turn left on Park Boulevard to the parking areas at Park Blvd. and Presidents Way. Do not attempt to enter the park using the Laurel Street Bridge -- it will be closed to traffic. If you park on the west side of Balboa Park give yourself extra time to walk the distance to the Start Line and remember the shuttles from the Finish Line will only bring you back to Presidents Way. If you park near the Zoo, walk along the Park Boulevard sidewalk until you reach Presidents Way.

Team Up For fun!

Forming a team is easy!
Just adhere to these few rules, and you won't get dizzy:

  • Register your team by signing up online or by faxing your team captain registration form (in your team packet) to (760) 692-2901.
  • Read everything in your team packet! The more you know about the race, the better team captain you will be!
  • Complete the team entry form with your contact info and due date (be sure to select a date early enough to allow sufficient time to organize everything and turn into Race Headquarters by April 3). If you are using online team registration, you only need to collect entry forms for your team members who DID NOT register online.
  • All team packets are due and online team registration will close by 5 p.m. Monday, April 3. There will be NO deadline extensions and NO late team entry forms accepted. Registration after 4/3 will be for individuals.
  • Pick up your team packet at our team packet pick-up and registration -- see info below.
